Is Shawshank redemption a true story?
Before Frank Darabont was a director and producer on shows such as Mob City and The Walking Dead, he was just another producer in poverty. However, he was a fan of Stephen King Books, and always had a dream to make a movie from one of these books. The best thing about Stephen King’s novella was that they always found their way onto the screen. King’s policy was to give aspiring actors the rights of his short stories for $1. Darabont gave King $1 in 1983 to make the movie The Woman in the Room. King wanted to produce something that was related to Shawshank Redemption and Rita Hayworth. What’s the Story of The Movie?
Andy Dufresne is convicted in 1947 of the murder of his wife. He receives two consecutive life sentences at Mansfield state correctional. After a few years in prison, Dufresne hears his wife complaining about inheritance tax and offers to help him shelter the money. After being subject to an attack that almost cost him his life (Andy’s), Hadley beat Bogs until he was left crippled. Soon Andy is re-assigned to Brooks Hatlen’s library position as an assistant. However, this was a cover to allow Andy to assist Brooks Hatlen in managing the financial affairs of prison staff. Soon, he begins to write letters to legislators requesting additional funds to improve the prison’s library.
Brooks was released on parole in 1954. He had been in prison for over 50 years and couldn’t adjust to life outside of jail. Andy is involved in a fight and sent to solitary confinement. 1963 is when Norton began to exploit prisoners as cheap labor for public works. He also received bribes. This money is laundered by him under the false name Randal Stephens.
The Tommy Williams Story
Tommy Williams is convicted of burglary in 1965 and sent to prison. Red and Andy become close friends, helping him pass his GED exams. Tommy revealed to Andy and Red, a year later that Tommy’s cellmate had confessed about Andy’s murder of Andy’s wife. Andy quickly approaches Norton to discuss this development, but instead of listening, he sends him back into solitary confinement. Tommy was robbed of his freedom and murdered by Hadley. Andy, out of frustration, threatens to stop the laundering but is threatened with the destruction of the library. After two months in Shawshank prison, he would be freed from solitary confinement and he began to talk about moving to Mexico.
The Jail Escape
Andy’s cell was found empty after a roll call by the inmates. Visibly furious, Norton throws a stone at Raquel Welch’s poster and reveals the tunnel Andy had been digging for nearly twenty years. Andy had just used the same rope to get out of the sewage pipe the previous night. He also had Norton’s shoes and suit along with evidence of laundering.
Andy pretends to be Randall Stephen while he is under manhunt. He then makes off with all the money he has laundered through different banks. The ledgers and other incriminating papers are then sent to a local paper. Norton escapes arrest and is quickly arrested by police.
Red is released from prison after serving about 40 years. It is very difficult for him to adjust to the outside world. Buxton is his next stop. He finds money and a note from Andy asking him to visit Zihuatanejo. Andy is there, and he finds Andy. They were reunited.
